Scarface is setting the record straight regarding comments that began circulating online this week that implied that Face was unhappy with his tenure at Def Jam. The Houston hip hop legend says that the comments come from a much longer interview and were spread without context. "I needed a bigger part of [Def Jam] and they wanted to play like I wasn't bringing business," Scarface was quoted as saying about his Def Jam exit. "Everything that's hot right now is what I brought to Def Jam from Rick Ross to T.I. because you know, Def Jam wouldn't touch T.I." He clarified his position in a statement issued to SOHH. "That interview, which was over a month ago, was NOT about Def Jam," Scarface wrote. "It was an interview I did about my upcoming new record and the new moves I'm making. The Def Jam item is a 2 minute comment from one question I was asked during the interview. Why is everyone trying to start some mess by focusing on that one comment? I left Def Jam 10 years ago. Wiz Khalifa and Kanye West may both be linked due to Amber Rose, and Kanye may have mentioned Wiz in his song "Way Too Cold," but for his part, Khalifa doesn't have any issue with West. The Taylor Gang rapper says that he would be open to working with Kanye. "I took it as he knows I'm a good guy," he said. "He really was into her, so the fact that we're two great people that are treating each other well, he's coming down and saying, 'Hey, hats off to you.' That's how I see it." Specialty Box Office: ?Bernie? Bows Hot; Others Not So Much; Holdovers OK
Millennium Entertainment scored one of the highest limited release debuts of 2012 in terms of per screen average over the weekend with director Richard Linklater’s latest feature. Starring Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey and Shirley MacLaine, Bernie bowed with a spectacular $30K average from three locations in New York, Los Angeles and Austin in the final weekend of April. Bernie‘s initial triumph comes as the overall box office plummeted over the weekend. Millennium was naturally enthused, gushing that the right combination of marketing, publicity and audience approval worked in the film’s favor. “Word of mouth is our friend here, which is the best friend you can have in the movie business,” Millennium’s Andy Gruenberg told Deadline this morning. “Almost dollar for dollar, New York, Austin and LA were identical. This is an American picture that is an audience pleaser. It’s one of a kind. Jack Black did a tremendous amount of publicity.” The distributor will open Bernie in additional cities in Texas and expand its presence in NYC and L.A. next weekend. The feature, which opened last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival, will jump into the top 20 markets May 18th. Magnolia Pictures opened crime thriller Headhunters at four theaters, grossing a decent $45K ($11,250 average) while Kino Lorber debuted two films, Elles and Whores’ Glory with more modest results. | Prosecution Claims Songs Show Intent To Murder
Rapper Lil Boosie could have his lyrics used against him in court during his trial for first degree murder. Judge Mike Erwin has ruled that specific lyrics from one of his songs are admissible as evidence in his trial and can be used by prosecutors to show personal intent in the case. Alvin Howard, the interrogating officer of the Baton Rouge police, claims that the specific words “187,” “murk,” and “cake” are references to Boosie allegedly hiring a hitman to murder Terry Boyd in 2009.Boosie's attorneys argue that Officer Howard is not an expert witness in rap slang, and also claim that the prosecution may have altered the lyrics of the track in question, rendering the song inadmissible. Boosie faces life in prison if convicted. |
