Political Prisoner No Longer Facing Capital Punishment
Former Black Panther Mumia Abu Jamal is no longer on death row. The political prisoner, convicted of the 1981 killing of police officer Daniel Faulkner, had been sentenced to death in 1982. However, District Attorney Seth Williams announced his decision today to spare Abu Jamal's life. "There's never been any doubt in my mind that Mumia Abu-Jamal shot and killed Officer Faulkner. I believe that the appropriate sentence was handed down by a jury of his peers in 1982," said Williams. "While Abu-Jamal will no longer be facing the death penalty, he will remain behind bars for the rest of his life, and that is where he belongs." Over the years, several hip hop artists have voiced their support for Abu Jamal, including Jay-Z, 2Pac and dead prez. |
