| Rappers Defense Team Claims He Deserves New Trial
The legal team for incarcerated rapper Corey "C-Murder" Miller appeared before appeals court judges yesterday (October 5) to argue that Miller deserves a new trial. The rapper is serving a life sentence, having been convicted twice for the shooting death of a 16 year old in January 2002. The teen, Steven Thomas, had been involved in a dispute and was beaten and shot outside of a nightspot called the "Platinum Club" in Harvey, Louisiana. In 2003, Miller's first conviction was overturned after it was revealed that prosecutors for the state had expunged the criminal records of some of their witnesses. He was eventually convicted in 2009, though one of the jurors later claimed she was 'pressured' into finding Miller guilty. Miller's current legal team is made up of lawyers from New Orleans and Harvard attorneys that have signed on to represent Miller voluntarily. He has reportedly no funding for legal expenses, having exhausted his funds through two trials and two appeals. “Not one piece of physical evidence directly linking Corey Miller to the shooting,” lawyers explained to a judge in their appeal. “The irreconcilable tales of two flip-flopping, deal-driven and reluctant (to testify) witnesses is the only evidence propping up the state’s case.” |
